NUME

N U M E

N U M E, 2022.
Individual Exhibition in Rua das Gaivotas 6, Lisboa, Portugal.

NUME was drawn and inspired by the fascination with the night sky, the stars, the moon and all the strange imagery of the cosmos. Visually it intended following the flying steps of a traveler towards the sun inside a spacesuit, which gives allowance to wander in the area of mysteries. A space that we imagine full of objects, planets, soils, seas and mountains. The body of a spaceperson is visualized, a person free to have gender, to be political or ethical, to have morals and faith. Just wandering off with a helmet and go travel, see and dream. This is the image, in which lies the foundation for the contextual and visual concept of this piece: the astronaut as a poet.

In this hypothetical journey, the paradoxes of the desire to discover space and to fantasize with its consequent designation and occupation are addressed. The astronaut becomes a metaphor for our desires and fears, while exploring and escaping from the Earth, we continue to damage, abuse and change. It is a being that never arrives because it never leaves, trapped in a melancholy of existing and being “from” but actually no longer belonging to Earth. The terrestrial is being transformed and changed, mutating in its own essence. Someone who wears a suit that becomes another body. Through his vision, we begin to familiarize ourselves with these cosmic objects and bodies and at the same time feel an expansion of the fragile notion of what nature really is. Nature is a remix, a continous mutation. The natural is artifical. The artifical natural. Boundaries are torned and new people are born. New worlds are shaped and created after being destroyed. And once again the circle begins…

Sound of the exhibition was inspired by the Voyager Golden Record and was designed by Francisco Babo.
